"Shirley's Trail": A Memorial to a Dear Friend

In 2000, leukemia took our dear friend, hard-working chapter coordinator, and devoted board member Shirley McPherson. By the grace of her husband, Pat McPherson, the Pinellas Chapter of FNPS was selected as the steward of Shirley's memorial. In coordination with Heritage Village in Pinewood Cultural Park, and with the contributions of dozens of friends and family members, the Shirley McPherson Nature Trail was created. There is also a stone marker at the park with an engraved plaque in remembrance of Shirley.

Shirley's Trail wanders through a pine flatwoods habitat and includes native plants used by Florida's pioneers and prehistoric native people. The trail created in Shirley's memory combines her love for education, Florida history, and native plants into an enduring legacy for the public. Shirley was well known to those who attended the annual Heritage Jubilee arts and craft show, where she sold both native (and some non-native) plants and dispensed gardening advice and encouragement. This project won 2nd place in the Institutional, Non-Professional category in the 2003 FNPS Landscape Awards.

Heritage Village is located at 11909 125th Street North in Largo. Its historic buildings house period furnishings and exhibits in a natural, park-like atmosphere with the feel of "Old Florida." It preserves Pinellas County history for the education and enjoyment of school groups, residents, and visitors. Its gazebo is often used for weddings, it is home to the Pinellas County Historical Society, and it is the site of numerous public events throughout the year.
