Pinellas Chapter FNPS Adopts A Dune at Honeymoon Island

The Pinellas Chapter FNPS accepted a challenge recently from the Friends of the Island Parks to "Adopt-A-Dune" at Honeymoon Island State Park. The chapter donated $2,000 to fund replanting of shoreline vegetation that has been lost due to erosion.  Chapter members are invited to to help HISP rangers plant new dunes species, listen to speakers on the importance of dunes on Floridia’s coastline, and witness the installation of their donor plaque.

The Pinellas Chapter dune is located just south of the restrooms in the north beach parking area. See Dune A in the graphic below.

Members can join us on Saturday, October 2nd, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm to celebrate the dedication and planting of the dune on Honeymoon Island that the Pinellas Chapter FNPS has adopted. If you are able to attend, please RSVP here.

Please arrive at the park by 9 AM on Saturday, October 2nd for a brief thank you from park administration.

From 9:20 AM - 11:45 AM we will be planting over 8,000 plantlings with the help of 50 volunteers. From 11:45 AM - 12:15 PM staff will be installing donor appreciation plaques.

Things to bring:

  • Hat / sunglasses

  • Gardening gloves (optional)

  • Beach sand bucket (optional)

There is no entry fee for participants of this event. Simply let the toll booth attendant know you are participating in the Adopt a Dune program. And finally, feel free to invite friends and family to join in our planting efforts this weekend!
